The Seventh Pre-Conference Seminar of IC-THuSI 2016

Exstrimism, Decline of Civilization and Response of Islamic Ummah

Postgraduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta

Jakarta, October 18, 2016

We have destroyed this world theoretically before we destroyed it practically

(R.D. Laing)

Extremism, in any forms, is a symptom of growing catastrophe in the world at the present.  No matter which kind of extremism is – religious, non-religious or anti-religious motive and background including extreme arrogance-, this contemporary social pathology has posed, been posing, and will pose our life at stake severely.  Devastating social order, humanity crisis, decline of civilization, absence of peace, and desperation are global existential threats that we are facing today, from Jerusalem to Kandahar, from Aleppo to Kiev, from Pentagon to Riyadh.

Ignorance and reluctance of acknowledging this fact makes our situation worse. If Hannah Arendt says, “Violence is a result of failure in human communication” then here we say that “The present malaise and catastrophe is a result of failure in man’s knowledge”. Alexis Carrel, a Nobel Prize Winner, says, “Modern man is a stranger in the world that he has created. He has been incapable of organizing this world because he did not possess a practical knowledge of his own nature”.

By means of this pre-conference seminar, we are in hope that we still have a chance to talk about the world and ourselves. This seminar is set for raising deep questions and inquiries in a broad framework such that we might uncover the underlying root causes of extremism, a psycho-sociopathic phenomenon in the modern world.

Raising deep questions and inquiries on existing extremism would be under three perspective of analysis, namely Theology and Islamic Thought, Culture, and Philosophy. The first perspective will employ root cause analysis on extremism as a psycho-theological phenomenon. The second one will conceive extremism as a product of certain socio-cultural mentality. The third perspective would be an endeavor for applying philosophical reflection on extremism as a kind of man’s action. It is expected that each analysis would be exposing fresh ideas and insightful understanding on this ruthless peril for humanity and civilization.  Whoever has interest to contribute his/her ideas is highly welcomed.

On the basis of the above-mentioned description, the conference theme might be broken down into three sub-themes:

  1. Extremism, Desperation, and Irrational Mentality
  2. Radicalism and Instrumental Reason
  3. The Role of Islamic Intellectual Tradition for Eliminating Religious Extremism
